“In the case study Path of Impugnity, we look into the Mariana Dam Disaster and Brumadhino Dam disaster, which occured in Brazil respectively in November 2015 and January 2019. In both events, a tailingdam affiliated to a mine complex, (co)owned by the compagny VALE, faces a major failure resulting into the collapse of the dam. During the Mariana’s events, a mud flow of 60 million cubic meters of contaminated sludge (with a large portion of iron core and silica) got unlished by the failure, making it the worst environmental catastrophe of Brazilian history. Three years later, the collapse of the dam, resulted into the release of 12 million cubic metres of tailing (with a very high concentration of cadmium), with a death toll reaching 270 people.”
“As trials and settlement are still going, and as the preliminary hearings for Brumadhino just started a few days ago in the 2nd Federal Crimanal court of the Belo Hozionte Judicial Subsection, we focus here on tracing and comparing the recovery pace and evolution, of the destroyed and poisoned lives and landscape to the economical recovery pace and evolution of VALE.”

Even though observation can be a multi-sensory tool, we will be focusing on visual remote sensing, through satellite sensors, using Google Earth engine. The first step is to compare the different datasets and satellites available to the public, what type of data can be retrieved , and what are the different landscape’s angles we can observe to interpret the set of materials forming the structure of the areas (landscape scale).”

“we put the focus on tracking the economical evolution of VALE. For it, we used google shit and Google finance. To track the stock price of VALE on the weekly basis through a period of ten years (2015-2025). The goal is to see the impact of the disasters on the markets value, and calculating how long did it take, for both events, for the VALE’s value, regulates again.”

The very cynical obersation that can be made, observing the different charts, is the absence of visible disturbance in the stock activity. If we were to take off the red circles indicating the week of the incident, and were to show those graphs to a neutral person asking them if they can tell by the stock motion when did the disaster occured, they would most probably could not tell. If we look a bit more in detail, we can observethat the value decreases slightly in the weeks following the dam collapses, but increases again in a matter of months.
Mariana and Brumadhino are spatial disturbances (environmental disasters) which should have got visible economical consequences on stock values over time, but they barely startled shareholders.

“We have so far, been focusing on tracing economical and environmental impact, by artificial sensing means. But to trace the social impact of those anthropogenic disasters, we need to focus on the human. As we could loose ourselves in a poetic essay of the landscape, once symbol of community and home, turned against the people who considered it their roots, whom then got frightened by the land which was carrying their life. We wish to focus on a rather simpler approach. Asking the people, talking with the people, How are you? How has life been treating you? Could you rebuild your home? Did you leave the region? Did you loose someone dear to your heart? Are you grieffing? How are your childrens? Did you get a compensation? What are your plans for tomorrow afternoon? What are your plans for the future? How are your parents?”
